Combining the sweet and punchy power-pop sounds of the Beach Boys, Byrds, and Big Star, Teenage Fanclub has been one of the most consistently underappreciated bands since they burst out of Glasgow in the '90s.
This May, they returned to Toronto for the first time in over 5 years, playing at The Concert Hall. The newly renovated historic venue provided an intimate space for their band to perform and unleash their melodic sound.
The band, minus co-founder Gerry Love, who left the band in 2018, played through songs from 2 latest albums and a litany of favourites across their discography.
The shimmering power pop of opening songs “Home" and “Tired of Being Alone” shined, as well as the crunchy power of 90s favourites “Alcholholiday'' and “About You.”
The chiming guitars and angelic harmonies were on full display throughout the set, with other highlights including “Your Love Is the Place Where I Come From” and the classic track “The Concept.”
After the main set ended they returned with a 4 song encore. This culminated with the sonically dense and layered song from their first album, “Everything Flows.” Norman Blake and Raymond McGinley's twin guitar and vocal attack is as strong as ever and propelled Teenage Fanclub into a brilliant performance that sent everyone home happy
